Happy Birthday to be,
Happy Birthday to be,
Haaaappy Biiiiirthday to beeeee
or not to be,
oh me
Pretty stupid. Though I'd rather be stupid and original than clever and derivative.

Birthday today... tonight, tomorrow, whatever. I usually take $100 and go buy myself some stupid things - in the past I've bought leather gloves for driving, a phone shaped like a dinosaur, the speed racer dvd set (the animated series), an emu foot... I don't know what I'll go buy tomorrow.
I bet I will get myself a fancy coffee drink down at Peet's coffee on Hawthorne tomorrow...
Damn. I was just writing an email and I forgot if it was 2008 or 2009. The aughts are almost done. And I don't even know if that's how to spell aught.

So now, to me, birthdays are instead more for the people around you. A happy anniversary of sorts to celebrate the mere fact of you being thrust into this world to share the joy and pain of life with everyone around you.
I do not know you, but I am glad for your existence. I appreciate what you share with me and the public smart enough to look your way.
[insert adjective here] birthday to you--however you want it to be.

BTW, did the New Yorker intentionally make a Northwest connection by putting the penguin cartoon in Sherman Alexie's piece, or was it just a coincidence?

Birthday wishes...
I intended to wish you a happy birthday, like all the others up here, but thought better and figured, "Maybe you'll appreciate a mediocre birthday instead, since happiness is fleeting, but mediocrity lasts for several days, at minimum."Mediocre birthday, tmcm! You're awesome entertainment. ^-^
